Well, apparently the web counter service that Larry had been using for NETTG’s site has started serving up random pop-up ads in their javascript… which thing we naturally disapprove of. Ben approached me for suggestions and I have reinstalled AWStats on Hedwig. Before we rebuilt the server in April, I had been using it to generate static pages, much to my general enjoyment. However, when the box crossed over to Slackware… I didn’t back up the relevant log data and we thus lost almost a year’s worth of usage statistics, much to my great distress.

So now, we’re using the dynamic perl pages which produce some rather nice output. The machine is fast enough to handle it, so I am planning on leaving this up and running how it is. If we actually feel like making these numbers public, I will probably have it compile static pages with slightly less information included.

One other cool thing – the script honors one’s browser’s language preferences. Thus, when I switch to Japanese mode, it actually displays the stats in Japanese. Very cool. I wonder how long it will take Esa to discover this. Hmm… I wonder if they have a Norweigan translation. I assume so. His response’ll be funny if he’s set up that way…
