ar tonelico on ps3 problem

12-14 hours into playing Ar Tonelico (NIS/Gust’s latest PS2 title) on my PS3, my save file got corrupted last night.

Specifically, it happened shortly after clearing “Phase 1″ and engaging in a bit of diving (getting both girls to lvl 6) before heading back down the tower. I went back to the inn to save one final time before leaving town and got a “Load failed” error. I tried switching out virtual memory cards but no luck.

Upon eventually rebooting the console, the save failed to read again… so I’m stuck with much lost progress. And it chose a very dramatic moment plotwise to die on me. Ammon is not well pleased.

Kotaku has a report of somebody else experiencing exactly the same problem. He even provides a screenshot. [However, Kotaku is also a bunch of elitist meanie-heads and they won't let me comment on the post :P]

I’m still not certain whether it’s the PS3’s fault or the game’s itself. I have noticed a few possible bugs that I am blaming on the software not the hardware (I do have a pre-order of the game, so there could also just be a bug with the first print or something…). I’ll reserve passing judgement against the console until verifying that the problem only happens on the PS3 and not on the PS2.

I’ll write more about the game later… when my heartache heals enough to start over from scratch… on my PS2… *sniff* For now, just the warning.

After reading the comments on the Kotaku post, it was suggested that the problem was with a lack of free space on the virtual memory card. I copied the save over to a fresh card and attempted to restore from there, with no luck. So the save file is in fact corrupted. *sigh*

It does too happen on the PS2. My first guess was it would be the memcards fault, since it’s no original sony one and the reviews of mine said it sucks and sometimes screws up savegames. But well, it never ever happened before and after my bf and me searched for solutions in the net we found programs to format the card and stuffs. (Since it gave us an error when trying to delete the corrupted file too.. x__X)

Anyways. I started the game again and again.. like 10 times and it always gave me the stupid error… I haven’t had any motivation to try and play a little more and save at another point of the game, but I guess it wouldn’t have worked anymore.

I’ll try it again on monday with an original sony card.. gonna tell you what happened then.. x_X

Sigh, and you have just confirmed my deep suspicion and greatest fear.

Thanks for the heads up re 3rd party memory cards. When I find the heart to, I’ll remember to use my official memory card when playing again.

It does not have anything to do with the memory card, or even where you are in the game.

I was playing this game on my PS3, using the hard drive’s memory card, and I got the same problem. I deleted the save file and started the game over, and it did the same thing much earlier in the game then when it happened the first time.

I got frustrated, and switched to my PS2, and started over with a sony memory card and the same problem happened once more a little later in the game then when it first happened on my PS3.

I brought the game back to the place where I bought it, and the guy working there said it happens to a lot of people. They were accepting returns on it because of the problem. It just seems to be a software glitch in the game.

Yeah, it seems to be some kind of software glitch, but still it did work with the original Sony card and later too with the new MAX card we bought since the old one was screwing up on other games two after it first happened with Ar Tonelico.

Anyways, after finishing up the game I really feel like all this wasn’t worth the trouble.. I was expecting far more of the game. :/
